ULT-SOUND DS-4M CUSTOM is a replica of the final version of the drum machine originally produced by Toyo Gakki. This release combines the analog sound characteristics of the vintage design with updated control and connectivity.
 
As in the original version, the FINE TUNING slider is replaced by a BEAT TUNE control, which enables VCO frequency modulation via the signal of the gate. When the BEAT SENSE switch is engaged, pitch is controlled not only by trigger presence but also by gate signal amplitude, allowing dynamic pitch changes according to gate level.
The rotary TUNING switch is substituted with a precision potentiometer for accurate manual tuning.
A CASCADE TRIGGERING function (MULTI VCO MODE) is introduced, enabling multiple voices to trigger simultaneously from a single trigger source. This setup supports layered drum creation: for example, the first voice forms the fundamental drum sound, while the same trigger activates other voices configured for attack, noise, or other elements. Each voice is independently adjustable and can be routed to separate outputs.
 
MIDI and connectivity
 
- Four independent MIDI channels: Each voice can be addressed separately, just like in previous versions.
- Unified MIDI channel: All four voices can operate on a single MIDI channel for streamlined sequencing.
- Polyphonic Mode: Allows all four voices to be played in chordal arrangements on one MIDI channel, with separate triggers for each voice.
- Velocity control via MIDI: Expressive dynamics are now possible, with MIDI velocity directly affecting the sound.
- Dynamic Gate Inputs: Gate inputs now respond to the level of incoming signals, allowing dynamic control over output volume for enhanced expressiveness.
As in previous versions, the DS-4M CUSTOM retains essential connectivity options, making it versatile for both studio and live setups:
- Trigger Inputs: Dedicated trigger inputs for drum pads.
- CV/Gate Inputs: Individual CV/Gate inputs for each channel enable advanced sequencing and modulation.
- Individual Outputs: Separate outputs for each channel provide maximum flexibility in routing and mixing.
- Balanced Master Output: A high-quality balanced master output ensures pristine audio quality and compatibility with professional equipment.
